Overview

A woman dies, and the women who knew her sit up all night telling stories. Seven women, seven stories.

Directions

So the cover is the seven of them. One figure, rebuilt seven times, each with the symbol of her own story stitched on her apron — bread, a cross, a horse, a bird. They are not decoration, they are the seven women.

  • Seven women, seven stories
  • A symbol on every apron
Front and back covers laid side by side, the same folk border running round both
One stitched panel on black: a gold loaf of bread on red, hanging from a diamond
A blue panel with a gold spring wreath, four flowers set in a ring, a red heart stitched above it
A red panel with a gold stork stitched into it, long-legged and long-beaked
A blue panel with a gold cross, a red heart stitched above it
A red panel with a gold horse
A blue panel with a gold leaf, a red heart stitched above it
A red panel with a gold chicken
Challenge

I researched real Greek, Balkan and Slavic folk patterns and worked inside their rules, so it reads as cross-stitch rather than an imitation.
