Overview

Deerislnd played the This is Athens City Festival at Theatro Dora Stratou, a place rooted in Greek folk dance.

Challenge

Two or three days from brief to poster. I still drew two full directions in that time.

Design process

The theatre is rooted in Greek folk dance and the music is not. I looked at both sides of that before drawing anything, because the poster had to belong to the venue and to the night at the same time.

A single red and green folk motif in cross-stitch, over a dusk photograph of the pines at Theatro Dora Stratou
Three red folk motifs across the poster, the audience just visible in the dark behind them
Directions

We went in two directions and drew them both out properly rather than picking one on paper. The folk illustrations were my favourite. The typographic one is what ran.

  • Folk illustrations
  • Clash of fonts
One tall gold motif down the middle of the poster, with the crowd and the stone seats behind it
A poster laid out like a woven rug - diamonds of folk pattern with a record, a cassette, headphones and music notes stitched into them
Four stitched folk figures around a flower, above the line the dance never stopped, the music just changed
THE NEW FOLK over a dark sky, with two stitched folk figures either side of a red and green flower - one in a skirt, one in trousers
A poster framed like an embroidered sampler - a stitched border, folk figures and flowers, and a colour wheel at the centre
A photographic poster: DEERISLND in red over a blue panel showing the columns of the Parthenon, set against a hillside of Athens, with the date and free entrance across it
A second photographic poster: Theatro Dora Stratou above DEERISLND in a blue panel of Lycabettus hill over the rooftops, with FREE ENTRANCE in gold script
Final

A custom display font, masking an aerial view of the theatre itself. You read the name and see the place at the same time.
