Istorima

Overview

Istorima is Greece's archive of oral history: thousands of recorded accounts, gathered by researchers all over the country.

Design process

This was a team project at Holy. I worked on the researchers upload platform, the homepage, the search and filtering, the categories and the library components — both sides of it, the public archive and the tool researchers catalogue with.

The home page: Istorima Archive over a photograph of an interview being filmed, with the search box open and suggestions for wars, politics and Gallipoli underneath
Browsing by subject, and a timeline of decades from 1890 onwards - 1900 selected, listing the Macedonian Struggle and the Cretan Question
The search page with a long row of filters applied and the results listed underneath
The same search closer in - filters for events, subjects, decades and dates, and fifty-six results with a portrait beside each story
A story open in the player: video of a hillside above a village, a transcript below it, and notes saying parts were removed for legal reasons
The admin side - an interview record in draft, with the researcher, the narrator, the language, the date and where it was recorded
The subjects page: a grid of photographs, one per theme - sport, disability, archaeology, architecture, accidents, biographies
Challenge

The amount of it. Thousands of recordings, and the filtering is what decides whether any one of them can be found.
