Mood: Music of our desire

Overview

Mood is where you find out what is on tonight: the parties, the venues, the people going.

App redesign

The interface had to get out of the way. Every event comes with a poster, and the posters are loud, so I took the colour out of the UI and let the artwork carry it. That starts at the first screen.

The opening screen - a rainbow smear of light across black, and DISCOVER PARTIES under it
Onboarding: a wall of artist photographs stacked like polaroids, waiting to be tapped
Liking artists one at a time, a card for Princess Nokia over the stack, with skip and heart buttons underneath
The result of the onboarding - twelve artists liked across nine genres, and fourteen events found
Events picked from what was just liked, each card saying which artist it came from
An event page: the poster, the date and venue, buttons to save, share and buy tickets, then the lineup and genres

Exploring is the heart of it: what is on, where, and who is playing. I rebuilt the browsing so a poster is the thing you see first, and the text only tells you what you still need to know.

A day of music in Amsterdam - a week of dates across the top and the evening listed underneath, each with time and venue
The explore tab with search and quick filters, then event posters grouped by Amsterdam Dance Event and what is trending
The map, event posters pinned across central Amsterdam, some clustered into two or three
A For You list, every row saying why it is there - because you follow this artist, because you saved that one
A Charli xcx tour page with the artist photograph, the venue, and her genres listed as chips
Further down the same event - the venue on a map, a short description, and similar events underneath

Your profile holds what you are going to and what you have saved. It is the one part of the app that is about you rather than about the city.

A profile: photograph, name, and counts for events, artists, venues and movies, with the followed artists listed below
The search screen with the keyboard up and nothing typed yet
Settings - notifications, privacy, payments, connect Spotify, feedback, delete account and log out

When I arrived Mood only did music. By the time I left it did theatre and cinema too, which meant the same screens had to hold a film listing as comfortably as a club night.

The same day view switched to movies, each film with its genres, director and showing times
Films as posters, grouped into just announced and released this year
The filter sheet over a film page - date, area and whether the cinema is indoor or open air
A film page: stills, director, genres, the synopsis, and where to watch it sorted by distance
Saved artists with their upcoming events listed under each one
